On Wednesday, December 19, 2018, a conference room full of Montachuset Home Care (MHCC) staff participated in a training on Alzheimer’s and Dementia – Effective Communications Strategies. Presenter, Julie McMurray from the Central Regional Office Alzheimer’s Association for MA/NH, covered the different types of dementia, risk factors, and treatment modalities as well as provided resources. The focus on effective communication strategies included communication changes that take place throughout the course of the disease, how to decode verbal and behavioral changes and how to identify strategies to connect and communicate with the individual at each stage of the disease. Given the topic of Alzheimer’s and Dementia is an annual requirement for many MHCC employees, we had our own experts on this topic in the room. There is always value in learning how others frame and teach this valuable information.
